Assignment 8A - Solving the Problem

Opportunity -  Blinds, curtains, and any other window covering still let in light. When our body senses this light it can wake us up and affect our circadian rhythm. This can have numerous harmful affects on our daily lives including tiredness, inefficiency, and stress. The majority of Americans are not receiving the amount of sleep they need to properly function. Now, light could be removed as a factor affecting that statistic.

Solution - My solution to exploit the above opportunity would be a a company that creates and sells foam panels that can be inserted into a number of window sizes. These would be placed between the curtains or blinds already installed, and the windows. They would come with Velcro straps so they can be removed when natural light is desired. These foam inserts would fill all available space in the windows and thus would remove all natural light and  provide a much more natural sleep.

  1. I love this article. Sleep disorders and problems like this with the blinds and how it results in ineffectiveness in our daily lives is a huge problem. I believe that is definitely a true statement in that most Americans do not receive the daily sleep they need to function, as well as having a coffee dependency or caffeine of some sort. Which acts as an adenosine receptor blocker in our brains. That is a good idea you have, but i believe it could be cannibalized or is already invented.

  2. Tucker:
You are correct in your research and most likely personal experience. I do like the idea of using the foam because it could have a dual effect of not only providing blackouts, but also increasing energy efficiency. I know from experience that older homes lose a lot of cool energy due to inefficient windows. I have seen a very professional product on the market currently that essentially does the same, and the product does not make a house look a little awkward because it just looks like a blacked out piece of glass.

  3. I think this could be useful for people who live in cities with lots of light and night life, this way they can enjoy and benefit from the darkness of a good night’s rest. I think it could also benefit hospital patients, in their rooms they don't always get enough darkness, especially with the bright lights coming from the windows.
